Language

The mother-tongue in the islands is Capeverdean Creole.

This is a Portuguese based creole and is the oldest, still spoken, creole that exists. It is a full language by definition and not a dialect.

The official language nonetheless is Portuguese.

From island to island there are different creole dialects, in the north the “Sampadjud” is spoken while in the south most people speak “Badiu”.

The first foreign languages to be taught in schools are French and English. In the main touristic spots and cities, you will be well-understood when you use Portuguese, English, French, Italian or Spanish. It is however recommended that you learn some Creole words before traveling, not only to make yourself understood, but also as a sign of respect to the locals.
