Surfing in Cabo Verde

Cape Verde is mostly known in the water-sports-world for its excellent Kite and Windsurfing conditions. Nonetheless, (wave)surfing is also a sport practiced by many in these islands, whether locals or tourists.

You can find spots where the locals go to surf in pretty much every island of the archipelago, but Sal and Boa Vista are the only ones that offer some type of infrastructure to these sports and where you will be able to rent material, if you don’t bring your own.

The best waves to surf are from October to March, although between June and August there are also summer swells grazing the shores.

The strong winds in the winter months make this an excellent season for Wind and Kite surfing.

January and February are the coldest months in terms of water temperature (19º to 23º), and the only time when you might need a short-wetsuit. From March until December, the water temperature ranges between 20º and 27º, so you probably won’t need more than just your surf shorts and a licra for sun protection.
