Hiking in Brava
Nova Sintra: This village is the capital of the island and, because of that, the most populated town. From here there are several hiking trails starting, some going up the hill to Fontainhas, others going downhill until you reach Fajã d’Água. The church of Nossa Senhora do Monte is in the central point of the town and from there emerge the serpentine paths.
Fontainhas: On a round trip of 4 hours, you get to Fontainhas, the highest point of the hill, about 600 m higher than Vila Nova Sintra. The trails leading up to it consist of plastered streets and deserted roads, so as always it is advisable to take a guide. On a clear day, during the hike you have the opportunity to get a good look on the neighboring Pico de Fogo.
Fajã d’Água: Starting from Vila Nova Sintra, there is a serpentine path leading down to Fajã d’Água, in about 3h. If you choose to go through Cachaço, on the southern part of the island, the duration and the difficulty of the hike increase, but so do the breath taking views you will come across. On your way you will pass by oasis of mango and palm trees, so if you’re skilled (and lucky) enough, you might help yourself to some fresh fruit. When you get to Fajã, you can take a dip at the natural pool and cool off.
